Beeslaar Pinotage 2020 Wine Review

Seoul Wine Dispatch 2025. 10. 29. 16:44

Beeslaar Pinotage 2020

Right after pouring into the glass,
aromas of dark red rose, pickled chili, raspberry, and omija (magnolia berry) appear.

After about fifteen minutes in the glass,
notes of cacao, graphite, dark soil, and cool rosemary rise to the surface.

The wine shows a fresh, lively acidity,
evoking the sensation of biting into red plums and crisp red apples with their skins on.

It carries strong impact yet remains beautifully balanced.

As it opens further,
flavors of dark cherry and rose petals fill the mouth.

Keeping the wine on the palate reveals a cool herbal freshness, while after swallowing, a cocoa-like aroma lingers as the finish.

With each glass, the tannins become more noticeable, leaving the mouth slightly dry.

At first, its balance and moderate impact stand out, but as time passes, both flavor and aroma grow deeper and more elegant.

The Stellenbosch region in South Africa’s Western Cape, particularly the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, is regarded as the heartland for high-quality Pinotage.

The area’s shale based mineral soils, combined with cool mountain air and maritime breezes, create grapes with density, structure, and vivid character. The vineyard spans just 2.5 hectares, planted with 27-year-old bush vines, and each grape is hand-harvested exclusively for this wine.

The winemaker, Abrie Beeslaar, often called “the godfather of Pinotage,” is recognized as one of the most influential figures in shaping the global reputation of the variety. Having served for over twenty years as head winemaker at Kanonkop, one of South Africa’s most prestigious wineries, he played a key role in elevating Pinotage to international acclaim. In 2011, he founded his own label, Beeslaar Wines, where he crafts single vineyard Pinotage that reflects his philosophy and experience from Kanonkop.

Beeslaar Pinotage is made from handpicked grapes fermented naturally in opentop concrete tanks. During fermentation, manual punch-downs are carried out frequently to extract maximum color and aroma. The wine is then aged for about twenty-one months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, adding complex layers of dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco leaf, and spice.

With its exceptional concentration and remarkable aging potential, this wine represents the pinnacle of the Pinotage variety, showing both the elegance and power that South Africa’s signature grape can achieve.
