Kalkberg Weissburgunder 2021 Wine Review

Seoul Wine Dispatch 2025. 11. 16. 02:06

Kalkberg Weissburgunder 2021

Cool orange pulp and a hint of fresh green wood on the nose.

A touch of savory white pepper appears, though overall the aroma feels subtle rather than showy.

The real pleasure unfolds on the palate.

At the first sip, the bright acidity tingles across the tongue.

As the wine lingers, faint sweetness emerges, while savory meaty tones and white pepper hover through the nose after swallowing.

From the second sip onward, the acidity softens, revealing a rounded, supple texture.

Acidity: ●●●○○
Sweetness: ●◐○○○
Body: ●●●◐○

After 40 minutes in the glass,

aromas of ripe apple become noticeable even from a distance, and up close, notes of apricot, melon rind, and quince appear.

On the palate, it evokes fresh Reggiano cheese, and after swallowing, cool eucalyptus and mint notes unfold.

The finish recalls dry firewood and earthy, root-like nuances such as deodeok.

Kalkberg Weissburgunder 2021

Italy > Alto Adige (Südtirol) DOC

Produced by the Kellerei St.Pauls/Cantina St. Pauls cooperative in the Alto Adige (Südtirol) region of northern Italy, this Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc / Pinot Bianco) expresses the classic minerality and refined acidity typical of northern Italian white wines.

The grapes come from vineyards situated at 360–520 meters on the foothills of the Alps.

The soil is primarily calcareous limestone mixed with gravel and sand. The name “Kalkberg” itself means “Limestone Mountain” in German. The vines average 10–30 years in age, with some plots planted as early as 1947.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at low temperature, with a portion undergoing malolactic fermentation and maturation in oak barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months on the lees, adding texture and depth.

Located near the Austrian border, Alto Adige is a bilingual region where both German and Italian are spoken.

This wine carries both names—Weissburgunder and Pinot Bianco—reflecting the region’s dual heritage.

The high diurnal range and cool alpine climate contribute to its precise acidity, freshness, and clear aromatic expression.
