E. Guigal Gigondas 2021
Purchased from Emart in Korea — the bottle may have been seriously damaged.
Aromas of black plum, dark soil, and mushroom.
After swirling, meaty and black pepper notes rise from the glass.
At the first sip, it feels harsh — unexpectedly strong and bitter.

If described kindly, it recalls thyme and rosemary, but more bluntly, it feels like newspaper wrapped around tobacco and salami, or even powdered medicine.
Not charming, but rather musty and stale.
I honestly don’t understand why this wine is considered famous or enjoyable.
Notes of newspaper ink, meat, and squid ink on the nose; spicy thyme on the palate — overall quite difficult to appreciate.
Three of us with different tastes tried it together, and we all frowned.
Even with food, it was hard to finish a single glass.
One of the least pleasant wines I’ve had recently.
After one hour, the meaty character softened slightly, but still persisted.
Hints of rosemary and ginger emerged, and faint red cherry and omija (magnolia berry) appeared in the background.
After two glasses, I re-corked the bottle and revisited it two days later, served very cold.
This time: aromas of pomegranate, violet, and dark rose.
On the palate, blackberry, black cherry, and cocoa nibs linger — yet the bitterness of alcohol remains.
The animal notes from the first day have mostly cleared, making it cleaner but not exactly enjoyable — just less harsh.
Paired with potato chips, the wine felt more tolerable.
Served well-chilled, it might work alongside marinated short ribs or LA galbi-style grilled meat.

E. Guigal Gigondas 2021
Region: France > Rhône > Southern Rhône > Gigondas AOC
E. Guigal Gigondas is a Grenache-based full-bodied red wine representing the southern Rhône. Produced by É. Guigal, a prestigious Rhône estate founded in 1946 and now managed by the third generation of the family.
The vineyards sit on a mix of gravel, clay, and red soils, and the grapes come from vines averaging about 40 years of age. The blend is composed mainly of Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding structure and depth.
The wine is aged for over 24 months in oak before bottling, resulting in firm tannins and strong aging potential.
The 2021 vintage, shaped by a cooler growing season, is regarded as a balanced expression showing freshness, clarity, and solid structure.
